One thing about this pick is that Yzerman didnt pick the best player, he picked the position he wanted to cover first, defense ! Cozens would have been better IF you are not looking for a defenseman
Seider's got size and he is on D ...Byram would have been our pick but...he was gone. Its a good pick

Seider (6-3, 208), a right-handed shot, had an excellent rookie season for Mannheim in Germany’s top pro league. He had six points (two goals, four assists) and a plus-2 rating in 29 games and was named the league’s rookie of the year. He helped Mannheim win the league championship with five assists and a plus-6 rating in 14 playoff games. Seider had seven points (one goal, six assists) in five games to help Germany win the IIHF World Junior Championship Division IA bracket and advance to the top group at the 2020 World Junior Championship, where he likely will play a big role. He also scored two goals in five games for Germany at the 2019 World Championship. NHL.com analysis: The first real surprise of the draft. Seider proved himself against men playing in Germany’s top league and was outstanding at 2019 IIHF World Championship. The Red Wings have been looking to add young defensemen, and with Seider they have a player with one of the bigger upsides in the 2019 Draft class.

His potential is top 4 defensive dman. You want more high end skill at 6. Seider type of dman could be found in round 2 or 3. Hope to be wrong and Seider is the next Hedman.

Seider was not going to be picked in the 2nd or 3rd round. Brian Burke stated that he could have gone at number 10 overall and that Detroit could have traded down a few slots but then everyone would have known that Detroit was doing that and he may have gone at 8 or 9. Bowen was the top prize d-man but this guy is up there. Wings need quality young d-men and they got one. I don't expect him to make the roster next year but D-man usually take a bit more time.
As for buyouts. Of course we wanted to see something happen there but perhaps Yzerman wants to get one year under his belt and give everyone an opportunity to showcase themselves. It's not the same when you are a GM of another team to make a clear assessment. Everyone is on notice now and can't complain if they are bought out next season. Plus the extra season means that when you do buy the player out the hit on the salary cap is less. (not sure of all the rules on this but most understand the general idea of this).
Let's see how rounds 2 to 7 make out.

I don't know man. I'll give him a shot but Germany doesn't come to mind as being a hockey country really and the leagues are not on par with Canada, US, Russia, Sweden and Finland. Come to camp and see how its done, you'll get out of it what you put in. Kid sounds like he has a good attitude so if he invests in sweat equity he can be a gamer. Being a right shot is a plus as is his size (probably add 20-30 lbs of muscle when he finishes growing),
We really needed to fill the void of not really having an elite or true #1 defenseman. We lost this when #5 hung em up for good.
Progress....keep er movin!

RedWings second pick Antti Tuomisto is another right-shooting defenseman. 6-4, 193, from Finland. They also have picks 54 and 60 in second round. #NHLDraft

Germany did very well in the recent world Championships so there is not reason to think that he couldn't be a top 4 d-man. Lidstrom - no, but who is. That is a generational player. Good to see the Wings picking another large d-man in round two. They have a lot of young forwards who will fill the top six role in the near future. I want to see the Wings grab a decent goalie as well and take at least one goalie every year. How is it that the Wings can't find a good young goalie when other teams seem to come up with two of them.

I am not saying that Seider could be found in the second round, but this type of player can be found in the second round. Actually Tuomisto is similar to Seider based on the reports. Again, Seider is a fine pick, but imo it was too dangerous to leave Cozens and Zergas on the board. In the final average rankings Zergas came at #5, Seider at #16.

I was not happy to see Cozens ignored, big 6' 3" forward, same for Zegras ...but SY bet on defense ! that's it. I trust his judgment and i Believe it was the right move, we draft Cozens and it's for sure that Seider would not have been available for us.
