I'm OK with Flipper coming back. Helmer and Luke can use some competition

-----Seriously this is not a bad signing ----I cannot imagine you saying it if Filpula was signed by KH. Nothing against Filpula as a player, but the signing makes zero sense. He is the same player as Nielsen. Defensively responsible and limited offensively. We have too many veteran bottom six forwards already.

Well...you know..maybe i didn't Believe myself..or wanted to convince myself that this was a good move… And by the way i didn't say it was a good signing..just NOT a bad signing...anyways if it makes sense. I was very surprise when i heard the news, and prior to the signing and looking at the remaining FA on the list and i saw Fil saying to myself "would KH brings Fil back if he was still the Detroit GM " Oh and by the way Nielsen might not be around for long...who knows !

I never liked Nieilsen at $6 mill, same dealio for Green but he'll be coming back.
I kind of hope Kronwall retires but honestly I thought he played pretty good last season.
I do like that SY is making some contingencies if some of the younger guys are not yet ready. I'd take Filpula over Abby any day. I hope Stevie is serious about a little inner competitions for spots and playing time and hope he isn't afraid to scratch/bench any players not pulling his weight regardless of salary or past success.

---If that's the case, Fil signing makes perfect sense, but I do not see anybody taking Nielsen's 3 years remaining at $5.5

-----When KH was signing bottom 6 veterans, we called it blocking the path for the young players. Now, all of a sudden, the same action is a good contingency plan in case young players are not ready. That's exactly what KH was doing and saying. So far nothing changed. And Filpula is not taking Abby's spot which is cemented in the lineup no matter how poorly he plays. He will be taking Veleno's spot. And if Veleno is not ready, we still have 5 centers without Filpula (Larkin, AA, Glen, Nielsen, Ehn). And if you want AA be a wing and one of the centers is injured, then Helm can be centering 4th line. I am OK with Nemeth because we need somebody who actually plays solid defense and based on last year Blashill showed us he actually have guts to bench Ericsson.

That isn't case from my POV. If KH was still GM I'd still be OK with Filpula at 3 mil. My primary issue with Kenny Holland was overpaying for Vets (like Nielsen, Abby) who weren't worth asking prices and in some cases signed contracts too long in duration.

----Those contracts were terrible, but they stopped 3 years ago. Last 3 years (after the streak was finally over) KH has been doing a lot of good things. Now, I am not saying I feel bad KH left. In the long run, SY will do a good job (and he is really the reason I became a Red Wing fan), but making such a reach at #6 (leaving consensus true talent on the board) and then signing a 35 year old and for 2 years, I don't know, that felt like KH in 2015-16 all over again.

leaving consensus talent on the board ?...you mean Cozens, Zegras ? Yeah..could be, but Seider is no dummy and might even become better than the first two. Raw talent on the defense is rare on any draft. More and more i agree with our first pick. We need someone like him on defense and had we not picked him someone else would have before pick number 10.
And thinking more and more about Fil signing...suddenly realizing that we don't have any depth at center, specially after they said that AA won't play center next season so...suddenly Fil is darn welcome. If Veleno crack the line-up he will starts his career on the wing...propably with Nielsen …
BUT
The season is far away. Plenty of things can happens at the camp. I'm sure if Abby look as slow as he look last season i won't be surprise to see him waive just before the season starts. And it can happens to others too

Steve Yzerman has taken a more patient approach to his first summer with his new/old franchise than we imagined. His big free agency purchases were 35-year-old Valterri Filppula and 27-year-old Patrik Nemeth (two years, $6 million each). Eleven Red Wings are set to come off the books in 2020. That should be the Summer of Stevie, when the full-scale renovations begin.
Found this on MSN sports. Will be interesting in 2020.

Yeah, I'm sure Holland raided Stevie Y to take the most incompetent. KH Always prefers to take buddies before competence...
