Hank has the heart of a champion and like all aging champion athletes the body gives out before the heart. He had a great career and knowing him he probably didn't want any "farewell season" attention. I remember the first time I saw Hank, I believe it was the Olympics playing for Sweden when they said he was a Detroit Red Wing draft pick thinking alright Z is just another player we've been spoiled by along with Yzerman, Lidstrom and Datsyuk.

OOf, I can see the hesitation in giving Z too many minutes and I understand the concern about him taking time from younger players, but I still think he is the smartest player on the ice for us and he plays within himself. He was still our second leading scorer right? I know that says more about our offense than what Z still has in the tank, but meh...all things considered, I am good with one more year from him. I am not going to blame him for Blash's decisions.
Dylan will be the captain after next year. Green will likely get traded before the end of this coming year. The youth movement will be in full effect then, but I would rather it be after our crop of newcomers gets the Z leadership experience first.

BTW, if Z doesn't play this year, what does that do to our cap?

BTW, if Z doesn't play this year, what does that do to our cap? They will tell him not to retire, cause if he retires its full wages on the cap. CThey will place him on LTIR until the end of his contract and he will be another Mule...

Yarg, I still think that was a horseshit punishment move by Bettman. Those contracts were perfectly legal when they were made.

It's looking more and more like Hank won't play. Might be time for that warrior to hang up the skates. Feel bad for Hank but age catches us all. Great career. As a fan I am looking forward to see us turn the corner towards a transition. Excited to see the kids play. Excited to be coming to Montreal - right Pierre? article: www.yahoo.com/sports/back-issues-could-keep-red-222302280.html

MY expectations for next year went into the shitter hearing that Z is done for. without the "heart and soul" of not only the team- but the locker room- puts a lot of pressure on the remaining vets to maintain the "red wing way" and teach it to the plethora of youngsters expected to make the team this year (Zadina, Rasmussen, Hronek and Hicketts).

Z out could be the biggest boost since the cup year.
That'll force the brass to turn the corner into another type of team.
We could not be worst than last season. I still Believe that in the end, the allmighty influence that Z had into the Swedish unit and the rest of the group was a negative force. Now the team belongs to another group…
Maybe Blashill will be able to coach ?...and becomes the coach everybody thought he would be.

It certainly isn't looking good for Z. Says he'll miss camp and the start of the season. Who knows, maybe he'll heal up and return mid season. As much as I hate t say it I'm in agreement with Pierre that having Hank out will be a negative turned to positive now that we make the change of guard. Looks like we'll start the season with no captain as sure we'll just throw an "A" on another jersey. I say put the "C" on #71's chest

Pierre provoked a thought in me. Funny how Blash was supposed to be a great kids coach when he joined the org. Then the kids seemed to flounder a bit especially in his second year. Maybe something to Pierre's Hank theory.
Don't know if I believe the theory or not, but I still think the change will be good for us. Time to start a new chapter.

With Z gone who will set the team character? The Captain Russian Five, Nick, and the Swedes have left behind a great heritage. Dyllie appears to be the favorite son but he exudes speed and playmaking but what character? what kind of leadership? What tone will he set? And if not him, who? What ‘group’ is going to characterize this team this year? It appears to be wide open to start.

I think without Z we could be a team/organization without a rudder. He was the voice, the heart and the guts of the team. With all that praise being said... maybe now Blashill can exert his "influence" over the team to get them to play the type of hockey he wants to coach. Let's face it- with Z you knew it would be the slow, "pass it around" the perimeter offense when he was on the ice. I think when Blash was hired he was trying to get the run and gun offense started: long stretch pass, sprint up the ice, fast-pace. But with Z, Kronner, Ericsson, Abby, etc... he didn't have the personnel to do it. (Yes- I know we need better d-men for that). I always blamed Zetterberg a little for the team not embracing the philosophy Blash was trying to teach and instill. It always seemed like the old guard continued to play the old (Babcock) style they had grown accustomed to and familiar with. Slow, plodding, and methodical. When that wasn't working, they turned to hated (and unsuccessful) dump-and-chase. Now I think we will see the team take on that new approach Blash tried to install his first year. Let's hope it turns out well.
