Is anybody really surprised? I knew Babcock was a jerk from his introductory presser where he said "I'm not here to win President's Trophies and lose in the first round, I'm here to win Cups". Talk about throwing Dave Lewis under the bus. Then he proceeds to put Stevie Y on the 4th line basically trying to push him into retirement. What did they do his first year...won the President's Trophy and lost in the first round of the playoffs to Edmonton. Not so arrogant now are you Babs? Yzerman retires, like Babs wants, and Shanahan runs away to the Rangers, probably because he wanted to get away from Babcock (or perhaps he didn't enjoy being set up every night by Pavel). In 2009 at the outdoor game at Wrigley he's forced by Holland to put Chelios in the lineup because Chelios is a Chicago boy. He basically does a screw you to Holland and Chelios...he dresses 7 D and plays Chelios for 1 minute. What is generally forgotten about that game is that he played our backup goalie instead of Osgood, who definitely wanted to play in a high profile game like that. All Osgood had done was backstop the team to the Stanley Cup the year before. Then in 2011 he scratches Mike Modano in his last game so he retires at 1,499 games played instead of the 1,500 milestone. What kind of person does these types of things to Hall of Fame players? Mike Babcock...that's who. An arrogant jerk who is universally hated. I heard a funny story on the radio this week that said all the Red Wings referred to him as "Goldcock" because he always brought up how he won 2 gold medals in the Olympics for Canada. Both lineups were star studded and anybody on this board could have just opened the gate for those players. Canada's 4th line centre was better than any other team's first line centre. Half of Canada's wingers were better centres than the other countries top centre. Babcock was in the right place at the right time to take over a star laden Detroit team. When he got to Toronto I knew the way he treated the Toronto reporters (gotta be at least a hundred of them) that it would only be a matter of time before they turned on him. And turn on him they have. I think Babcock will have a hard time getting another NHL job. They're looking for new anti-Babs stories every day. They interviewed Holland last night about how much he knew of Babcock's methods, and Holland looked like a deer caught in the headlights. Nobody is coming to Babs defence. Oh how the arrogant have fallen.

I lost respect for Babcock in Yzermans last game he played for Detroit..down a goal in closing minuets of the third, offensive zone faceoff...Stevie Y on the bench..camera zooms on 19 and he didn't look happy. Babcock is a good coach for certain teams that are all kids and is only effective for 2-3 seasons before players have had enough of him. After that they are not buying what he is selling. The hockey world is what goes around comes around...I bet he never thought Toronto would fire him. I also wonder what Shanny had anything to do with that His treatment of Cheli was BS in the Winter Classic.
