Will have him and Zibanejad and a couple others on my team. Will be surprised if the Wings hang with them. Is this forum down to five people?

We had our longest streak of not losing a hockey game this season...8 days. --Only because we haven't played any hockey games I don't follow the Pistons but every single Detroit professional sport team SUCKS. Wings, Lions, Tigers and Pistons. For the 4 of you guys, remember how exciting the trade deadline used to be? Well here are are today. per ESPN (I like the comment about Holland and the NTC's) What to watch: If GM Steve Yzerman's rebuild of the Red Wings is a movie, the opening credits aren't even finished rolling. There's a ton of work to be done here, and it's clear that Stevie Y intends to amass talent via the draft, with nine picks in the first three rounds the next two seasons. There's more to be had, too, if he can find takers for his unrestricted free-agent defensemen: Mike Green (34), Jonathan Ericsson (35) and Trevor Daley (36), who all have some trade protection. Then there's the Jimmy Howard issue. The 35-year-old is an unrestricted free agent this summer. In theory, he's a solid veteran backup on a contending team. In reality, he has been terrible this season, with minus-7 goals saved above average. There might not be a market for that. Notes/restrictions: The Wings are projected to have $12.95 million in deadline cap space, per Cap Friendly data. As mentioned, the Red Wings have a treasure trove of draft picks, with some in every round in the next three seasons, save for the fourth round this summer. They also have the Sharks' third (2020) and the Golden Knights' third (2021). Nice work, Ken Holland. The Red Wings have eight players with trade protection, and seven of them are over the age of 32: Forwards Frans Nielsen (NTC), Justin Abdelkader (NTC), Darren Helm (NTC) and Valtteri Filppula (NTC); defensemen Green, Ericsson, Daley and Danny DeKeyser. Not so nice work, Ken Holland. Among the restricted free agents for the Red Wings: forwards Andreas Athanasiou, Anthony Mantha, Tyler Bertuzzi and Robby Fabbri. Our take: Yzerman's going to keep this rebuild slow and steady, but he has shown in the past that he can be aggressive in dealing young players while their stock is high. Please recall the 2013 deadline shocker when Yzerman's Lightning traded Cory Conacher to Ottawa for Ben Bishop. Along with dealing the obvious veteran assets, the Wings could use a trade or two like that.

If you go back and look at the drafts for the last 5 years or so, you almost never recognize a name from the 2nd or 3rd round. One exception is that Yzerman picked up Brayden Point in the 3rd round a few years back and he's a great player. Even most of the players taken in the first round end up being stiffs. It's rare that even the first 5 picks in the draft all pan out. After the top 3 or 4 picks the draft can be a real crap shoot. Some great players taken down at 18 or 19 and some real stiffs taken at 4 or 5. Gone are the days when you can pick up all time greats like Lidstrom, Datsyuk and Zetterberg with late or later round picks....that just doesn't happen anymore. When you're drafting 17 year olds it's pretty hard to predict the future with any degree of certainty. It sure would be nice if we got a bit of puck luck and came up with the first pick this year. Lafreniere is the obvious jewel in the draft. He looks very good but I can't see him ever being in the same ballpark as McDavid (who is) or Matthews.

Lafreniere is the best player in the draft but even if you finish last you only get an 18 percent chance of getting him. The key to finishing last is that you can't draft worse than the number 4 pick so with the Wings recent luck at the lottery I expect them to end up there. Number 4 will still be a good player. TSN has recently ranked the top 30 guys and the number 3 player is from Germany. Tim Stutzle of Germany was solid and very creative in the World Juniors. Maybe another trend in Detroit. First there was the Russian Five, then Team Sweden and now Germany players (the 4th Reich?).
Regarding trade bait with the current team, I think Green will get something in return. Bernier if Yzerman wants to offer him. AA , if healthy, could also be a great depth guy for any team with his speed and he would have reduced ice time with his new team so the defense won't be much of an issue.
The rest of the veterans have to be reviewed to see who should be bought out. It does still affect your cap space even though you can spread out the dollar amount over a few years (think it's 4 years but not sure). I want to see at least one player gone and preferably two but who knows the financial restrictions in the background. Let's hope that the Ilitch family is not turning into the Norris family.

Surely not the old Detroit News days. Forget most of those names already. The Doom and Gloomers back then criticized the Wings even when they were a GREAT team. Can imagine their thoughts now. Lets just hope the Wings can turn it around in the near future. I will start holding my breath now.....

You make a search for Detroit Red Wings news and Detnews.com comes up top. You make a search for Detroit Red Wings message board and our board is nowhere to be found. Under these circumstances there is no way to get new members… ...good team or not ! In our most recent board (hyperboard) we were groing cause we could be found doing a google search...not Freeforum.net.. that's life.

OK I must admit I have given up watching this game. I don't think we had a single legit scoring chance in 2 periods.
And, I'm sorry, if Dylan Larkin is our top center we are never going to contend. Dylan reminds me of Shane Doan of the Yotes. Perennial top guy on a losing team. NOT a difference maker. Dylan I think is the heart of the Red Wings for now he just needs a LOT more supporting cast.

i have yet to give up...but boy..is this hard to Watch !...it's like a constant PP against us. When they control the puck in our zone we just can't get it back ! Unless the Ranger lost the puck..and sometimes he is faster than us to get it back !
No positive here..well maybe Howard who played well half of the game.. Oh by the way would it hurt the team to try Cholo on a PK sometimes ? I'd love to see what he can do with more room to work. If we Don't try him down a man in a meaningless season like this one he will never have a chance.
...i guess its more important to play Biega/E and Hronek/Nemeth...a great pairings..lol
